Double podium in first 2019 Euroformula Open event
Teo Martín Motorsport achieved two podiums in first 2019 Euroformula Open event at Paul Ricard.
After collective test on Thursday, Guilherme Samaia set the pace on Friday before first qualifying session. Lukas Dunner was the man on Saturday becoming first Poleman of the year -first ever for him in formulas- aheade Aldo Festante P7 and Guilherme Samaia P8. The Austrian driver defended first place after the start while Festante & Samaia lost some palces after a collision in front of them in mid-field and then Safety Car was deployed to retire the crashed car.
After the restart Dunner was overtaken for Motopark drivers Liam Lawson y Yuki Tsunoda. Then he opted for a smart strategy looking after the tyres to fight at the end of the race but the Japanese driver was tough and the Austrian crossed the finish line in P3. On the other hand Festante had a collision with Christian Hahn forcing them to retire with a 3 position penalty for him in Race 2 while Samaia fought for points until the end to finish P8.
Sunday’s qualifying session was tight with Samaia P4, Dunner P6 and Festante P10 (P13 after penalty). The Brazilian driver took advantage of little contact between Lawson y Tsunoda to advance to P2 right behind Marino Sato while Dunner climbed to P4 and Festante started his own comeback.
Samaia had a nice battle with Lawson but the New Zealander won this time in mid-race with Dunner just behind him and Festate trying to fight for points. Finally Samaia achieved his second ever podium in Euroformula Open with Dunner P4 and Festante P11.
Then Lukas Dunner leaves Paul Ricard as P3 with 28 points, Guilherme Samaia P6 with 20 points and Festante P12 with no points yet. The team is overall P2 with 16 points. Next Euroformula Open round is scheduled for May 18-19 in Pau.
ALDO FESTANTE: “We had decent pace during the whole weekend, the crash in race one compromised the result on Sunday as it’s very hard to recover from a 3pos grid drop. Overall I think the work we have done so far is giving us a lot of confidence and we have to keep it on to get better and better”
GUILHERME SAMAIA: “So I felt we, as a team, had a pretty strong weekend. We set the pace through friday and saturday and had a really strong rhythem on all the races. I am really happy with how we developed and worked throughout these days, but we need to keep pushing to find this straight line speed that we lack. I thank the whole team for the excellent job they did and I’m sure our time will come!“.
LUKAS DUNNER: “What a way to kick off the season! Made my first pole position in a formula car, added another podium and I drive home with valuable points for the championship, I think I am on P3 in the championship. Of course you want to win, when you start from pole, but we have to be happy with what we all achieved! Thank you to the whole team, I enjoy every moment with Teo Martin Motorsport, we keep pushing!“.
